Golpe Tierra

Bass player Nick Moran must be one of the more versatile musicians in Madison: His main gigs are hip-hop band Dumate and Latin-jazz group El Clan Destino. While both of those bands lay low for a bit to write new songs, Moran will debut a new trio that may prove just as adventurous. Golpe Tierra matches Moran with guitarist Richard Hildner (who also contributes solid highlife-style playing to local Afro-pop group Kikeh Mato) and Peru-via-Chicago percussionist Juan Daniel Pastor on the cajon, a large, box-shaped drum from Peru. In a sound Moran calls “Afro-Peruvian jazz,” the band blends African rhythms with the melodic sense of Spain and the Andes Mountains region—and should be able to offer an intriguing counterpoint to Madison’s other good Latin-jazz acts.
